About the Classes and Instructors
This fall’s event will kick off on Friday afternoon with a hands-on workshop covering the entire Shaper System and ending in a welcome reception with dinner and drinks. Over the course of the day on Saturday, students will rotate through three diverse classes led by Yuri, Adrian, and Philip. Classes will be approximately two hours each and cover a mix of demonstration, hands-on instruction, and lecture. There will be breaks for meals, chatter, and of course lots of Q&A! All materials will be provided.
Steam Bending and Curvature
With Yuri Kobayashi
In this hands-on workshop, learn the fundamentals of steam bending – using free form bends and working with larger forms. Born in Japan, Yuri Kobayashi is a furniture maker and sculptor based in Rockport, Maine. Yuri holds degrees in architecture as well as design and taught at the Rhode Island School of Design for over a decade. Currently, she’s an instructor and lead fellow at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship.
Veneer Layup
With Adrian Ferrazzutti
Learn the process of creating unique patterns and geometric designs by laying up commercial veneers. Adrian Ferrazzutti is a woodworker and furniture maker based in Guelph, Canada. He is a 1998 graduate of The College of the Redwoods Fine Woodworking Program where he studied under James Krenov and faculty. Adrian has been awarded several Canada Council for the Arts Grants and has shown his work throughout North America.
Advanced Joinery on Origin
With Philip Morley
Get hands on with Shaper Origin and follow furniture maker Philip Morley in this two hour joinery intensive. You’ll learn how to create an angled bridle joint using Origin and Workstation along with other chair components. Born in the UK, Philip Morley builds one-of-a-kind custom furniture and teaches throughout the US. Regularly featured in Fine Woodworking Magazine, Philip is currently in residence at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship.
